How Many Times Must I Forgive?
S – Scripture:
Matt 18:21-22 – Then Peter came to him (Jesus) and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times? – No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!” (NLT)
O – Observation:
Matt 18:21-35 first describes the conversation between Peter and Jesus on forgiveness. In vs. 22-34 Jesus tells the parable (story) of a king who wanted to settle debts with his servants, the king forgive his servants debt, yet that same servant found someone who owed him money and demanded the debt be repaid; he did not do the same as the king did for him, which was to have mercy on him and forgive his debt. The master (king) heard what his servant did and said that the servant was wicked and had him put in jail to be tortured, until he could repay his debt to the king.
In v35 Jesus said, “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.” (NIV)
A – Application:
It’s always a challenge to forgive someone who has wronged you. I’ve written on this before in my devotions. I believe that if you are unable to rest, you have no peace about a situation between you and whomever, even if you were not the one that did wrong – you should go to the person and do as it says in Matt 18:15-19 so that nothing comes between you and your relationship with the Lord.
P – Prayer:
Father thank you for giving your Son for my sins. I thank you that I am able to follow your instructions and guidance in following your ways. I am never perfect and am always striving to do what I believe to be your will. There are times when I feel that someone has sinned against me, I need to forgive them. I have felt that people have sinned against those I care about – this seems harder for me to let go, yet I need to. I understand I have the responsibility to make right – many times the people who sin against me or those I care about do not follow your Word, are not your followers, so I must still forgive them and move on, not carry bitterness in my heart and mind, so that there is no interference between you and I. Lord thank you for your grace and mercy in my life. Help me to know and do your will. Help provide for me and my families needs. Thank you, in Jesus name, amen.
