 Clean and Unclean

Reading: Gen 46-47:31, Mt 15:1-28, Psalm 19:1-14, Proverbs 4:14-19

S – Scripture:

Mt 15:18-19 Jesus said, “18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man ‘unclean.’ 19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” (NIV)

O – Observation:

Mt 15:1-20: Jesus talks about “Clean and Unclean.”  The Phariseesa  , (Scribes and Pharisees in the time of Christ, who began to honor and hold traditions and the commandments of men, even over the commandments of God. b) asked Jesus why his followers didn’t follow the tradition of washing their hands before they ate.  Jesus replied to the Pharisees & teachers with another question, 15:3 “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition?… you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.” Then Jesus called them hypocrites!  Jesus basically said just because you don’t wash your hands, does not make you ‘unclean’; it’s what you have in your heart, that which comes out of your mouth, your actions, all those things are what makes you ‘unclean’.

A – Application:

It’s easy to get caught in what the worldview of what other people, the church, the government, and your community would say is the “correct” thing to do. The laws of the land are not always God’s ways.  Examples are: abortion, the bible says we should not kill – yet because the government allows abortion, does that now make it “right”?  Some states in our country allow homosexual marriages. The bible says that marriage is between one man and one woman.  In applying the scriptures of Mt 15, I am reminded that I am to live the life of God’s commandments, not mans. I am to test the words of man based on the scriptures and Words of God.  I am to seek God first in all things, Mt 6:33 so that I am not confused based on my own needs and wants but based on God’s guidance.

P – Prayer:

Father help me to not be like the Pharisees, who chose to seek the glory of man vs. God. Lord forgive me for my sins, my ignorance, and help me to know your will and follow your commandments. Help me to do what is right and to be a shining light for you. Let the words that come from my mouth be of your thoughts and words – that make me clean and that I am stopped in my tracks, put back into the place of correction should my heart bring forth unclean words from my mouth. Wash me, cleanse me, and cover me, so that your Holy Spirit within me would shine forth.
